They showed extraordinary courage and commitment to the community on October 9, 2005 when in pitch darkness, pouring rain, and the raging flood waters of Alstead, they rescued the Hancock family and Glen Frank from their house which was about to wash away in the floodwaters.

Captain Don Martin stood in the debris filled flood waters between his colleagues and the residents, holding a rope. On the other end of the rope 200 feet away and on top of a hill were Ms. Anderson , Ms. Kercewich, and Mr. Olmstead. With no way to communicate over the loud raging of the water, they managed to pull the family to safety
