Desmond is a Hometown Hero because...
On more than one birthday in her young life, she has asked her friends to make donations to the community rather than bring her gifts. In 2003 she donated several inches of hair to Locks of Love. She has had friends donate to the Monadnock Humane Society.

For Desmond’s eighth birthday on October 8, 2005 her friends brought donations for the American Red Cross, for the victims of hurricane Katrina, and also for the local victims of the Alstead floods, which fatefully, occurred on her birthday of October 8, 2005.
